Being optimistic does not mean that we are out of touch with reality, ignoring difficulties & obstacles or pretending that nothing bad can or ever will happen. But it rather means we have hope; no matter the turn of events, things will work out for the best.
Here are 5 practical steps which we can apply daily towards being more optimistic.
Smile the Blues Away
Smile every chance you can even when you don’t really feel like it. Or think about something/someone that makes you smile. You should be able to see an immediate shift in your feelings and mood.
I Cannot Do Everything, but I Can Do Something
When you help others, you don’t only leave a positive impact on their lives but you will also feel good about yourself. If you continue practising the above, you will find it becoming a powerful life-shaping tool.
A Grateful Heart is a Happy Heart
Be grateful for all that you have. Every time you’re feeling down and unhappy about things, think of 5 things you are thankful for for e.g. I am thankful I have a full functioning body, I have loving children/partner, I have good food to eat every day, I have a car so I don’t need to walk under the hot sun, I am good at cooking/golf/gardening, etc.
Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining
Try to look for the positive side of things. There may be a life lesson to be learnt which can be used in future situations.
Life is What You Make of It
The past does not equal the future. Just because you’ve experienced pain, disappointment or failure in the past, it does not mean that’s how things are going to be in the future too. Instead, ask yourself what lessons did that pain, disappointment or failure teach you. Learn from it and grow. Turn the negatives into something positive and you’ll be setting yourself up for success.
