6 Easy DIY Christmas Decors
Christmas is coming up and what better way to show off that Christmas spirit than by giving your home a holiday makeover. We understand that at times, the allure of store bought Christmas decor is hard to ignore. But on the other hand, there’s just something about DIY Christmas decor that makes it 100 times more charming – especially when you get the whole family involved!
By creating your own DIY decor, not only will you end up with one of a kind Christmas ornaments, but the forced (ahem…voluntary) family time also serves as a great way to bond, reminisce and create new and fun memories with your loved ones.
And if you’re worried about being pressed for time or how complex making DIY decor is, we’ve collected a list of 6 Easy DIY Christmas Decors that is not only thoughtful but don’t take up too much time to make either.
Photo Tile Christmas Tree
If your home isn’t big enough for a real Christmas tree (or even those fake plastic trees you can get in stores), why not opt for something a little more out of the box? Like a Christmas tree made out of photo tiles. All you have to do is print out your favourite, festive photos onto these 8”x8” re-stickable photo tiles and then simply hang them up on the wall in a Christmas tree shape.
As for where to place any potential presents, you can add on a box, wicker basket or galvanized bucket below the makeshift tree to collect outgoing gifts, party favours, or more holiday mail.
Additionally, once Christmas is over, you don’t have to worry about any complicated dismantling and storing process for the photo tile tree. You can simply remove the photo tiles and either rearrange or re-stick them somewhere completely different – incorporating them seamlessly to your everyday home decor.
Photo Christmas Wreath
A Christmas wreath has been a tried-and-true symbol of harmony, family, and solidarity during the Christmas holiday season. But like all decor items made from living plants, Christmas wreaths will wither after a while (so you can’t really keep them up for too long – less you want a mess on dried leaves everywhere).
So instead of using live plants, try making a memorable photo wreath instead. This festive idea is inexpensive and fun to make. Plus, it can be displayed all year long without the worry of disintegrating.
In order to make your own personalised photo wreath, you’re going to need:
- A wire wreath form (alternatively you can cut out a ring shape from a piece of cardboard)
- A hot glue gun
- Your choice of photo prints (either black or white or coloured prints).
Note: The photo prints can also be in different sizes and orientations to give your wreath a more dynamic look. The next step is to simply hot-glue your selection of snapshots to the wire wreath form in order to create your own holiday-appropriate photo wreath.
Pretty simple, right?
Story Tag Card Tree
If you’re a college/university student who’s stuck in the dorms over the holidays or an office worker looking to bring some Christmas cheer into your office space (without bringing something too big), you can consider creating a miniature ‘tree’ using Story Tag Cards.
Similar to how you’d create a Photo Tile Christmas Tree, all you need to do is print out your favourite festive photos, selfies or Christmas-themed scenery onto a set of Story Tag Cards.
Once done, simply arrange the Story Tag Cards into a tree shape before using your choice of pins, double sided-tape, blue-tack or glue to secure them to a wall, corkboard or any other type of vertical surface.
Note: The smallest ‘tree’ you can make only needs 6 Story Tag Cards!
Photo Tree Ornaments
Have a Christmas tree but no tree ornaments? No problem! Now before you go online to search for some cheap but generic-looking Christmas ornaments, why not consider making your own. Or at least a few of your own, at the very least!
Making a batch of DIY photo tree ornaments is an easy way to switch up your holiday decor without having to spend an exorbitant amount of money.
In addition, you’ll be able to have a ton of fun in the process. In fact, you can even make this a group project and throw a small Christmas ornament-making party with your friends and family. One of our favourite (and easy) to do Christmas tree ornaments is the photo tree ornament.
There are various ways you can go about making this, but the neatest way is to simply slip a few Mini Story Tag Cards into plastic id cardholders and thread a festive looking ribbon through the top hole (where the lanyard usually goes) before hanging them on the tree and voila! You’re done.
Giant Christmas Wreath
What’s better than a Christmas wreath? A GIANT Christmas wreath, that’s what! This DIY is easy to do, looks amazing and is perfect to place on the mantle or stylishly leaned against a wall.
You’re going to need:
- Hula hoop
- Twine
- Photo Prints / Story Tag Cards
- Clips/Pins/washi tape.
- Spray paint (Preferably gold or any other Christmas-ey colour)
- Plastic vines (you can get this from any craft shop)
Okay, to start off with, spray paint your hula hoop until it’s completely covered. Let it dry, and once that’s done, start wrapping twine around the hula hoop to create a sort of ‘web’ pattern in the middle.
Next, intertwine the plastic vines around the hula hoop frame to give it that ‘wreath-like’ look. Finally, use clips, pins or washi tape to adhere your favourite photos onto the twine.
Festive Coasters
If you come from a big family, you must have experienced losing your spot at the dinner table maybe once or twice – especially during big events like Christmas dinner. With a bunch of aunts, uncles, and a horde of older and younger cousins running about, things can get pretty chaotic – especially when it comes to seating.
A great way to mitigate this problem is via arranged seating and table placements. By assigning each relative a place to sit at the table, you’ll be able to save yourself a lot of pushing and shoving (and spilled food).
Now traditionally, most people would just write the name of a person onto a piece of paper and place it in a designated spot. But if you’d like to do something a little extra memorable, why not DIY a set of personalised coasters bearing your relatives names and photos?
Not only will they serve as indicators, but they’re also useful and your relatives can even bring them back as an extra Christmas keepsake!
